An animation that would be used in a fictitious night club on their giant TV screens was the assignment this time. Fine and dandy, except that the format was vertical, this presented a challenge for composing the frame. Also, having not had much time for club-hoping, I’d never seen a multi-screen set up that the teacher was describing. Regardless, we had to go with it.
Using a circuit board bitmap, I stuck it on a pair of reflective spheres and had them spin at varying speeds. Next, I made and abstract light fixture based on what I saw on the inner cover of Pink Floyd’s “Pulse” CD. Animating some spin on that too, I also had it shoot towards the camera and back again.
Hoping into After Effects, I made a copy of the clip and had it start a few frames ahead of the original at a fraction of its opacity, giving it a tripping “echo” effect. Then I found a track by the band KMFDM called “Search and Destroy” from their “NIHIL” CD and stuck the beginning on as an audio track.
